Take danger seriously.
An opportunity can only be assessed alongside its potential loss. Position size, liquidity and the conditions that would invalidate a thesis belong in the decision.
About Vaapad Capital
Non sine periculo
Not without danger.
For me, Vaapad is an image for dealing with the forces of the market: recognising fear, greed and excess, turning them into a decision of my own, and keeping control of myself in the process.
Vaapad · Form VII
Non sine periculo
“Not without danger.” To me, Vaapad expresses the ambition to channel dangerous forces deliberately. The motto reminds me what is at stake if I lose control.
Danger remains — even with experience, research and rules. Hence the question before every decision: What am I risking, and can I bear that loss?
The name comes from Star Wars: Vaapad, Mace Windu’s variant of lightsaber Form VII. I am drawn to the idea behind it: opening yourself to a dangerous energy, channelling it and coming close to the dark side. That also means confronting your own aggressive impulses.
For me, the image of a superconducting loop is central: taking in an opponent’s energy, letting it pass through you and redirecting it with control. I apply that idea to the market as an ambition: to turn emotional pressure into a deliberate decision.
Panic, euphoria and grand promises are part of the markets I operate in. When a commodities stock is hyped up or written off, I want to understand what drives the mood and what actually supports the business: contracts, ownership, capital requirements and potential dilution.
I look for opportunities in those extremes. Research has to establish whether they can support a speculative thesis. Keeping control also means leaving a tempting story alone, limiting a position or abandoning a thesis.
For me, it begins where conviction becomes overconfidence: falling in love with a thesis, ignoring counterarguments or needing to be right after a loss. A profit can reward recklessness. Even recognising these patterns does not make me immune to them.
I know these forces from my own decisions. That is why public documentation belongs to Vaapad: the thesis, the risk taken, the outcome and the later review should fit together. My mistakes and losses belong there too. It makes me confront the parts of the story I would have preferred to tell differently.
From the name to the practice
An opportunity can only be assessed alongside its potential loss. Position size, liquidity and the conditions that would invalidate a thesis belong in the decision.
Fear, greed and FOMO affect me too. Research, clear criteria and a willingness to change my mind give my decisions a framework.
Winners tell only part of the story. I aim to show mistakes and losses too, and to be clear about what the published data can support.
The approach
I focus on commodities and companies beyond the main headlines. That is where I look for overlooked connections. A contrarian opinion alone does not make a sound thesis.
Read the Field NotesAnnual reports, contracts, ownership structures, dilution and cost curves form the foundation. In the Field Notes, I connect these sources with assumptions, open questions and possible counterarguments.
What supports it — and what would prove my view wrong?
Before opening a position, I consider the amount at stake, liquidity and the scenario in which the thesis fails. Particularly with junior miners and micro-caps, the possibility of a total loss belongs in that assessment.
How much do I lose if I am wrong?
Published theses, recorded executions and later updates help explain decisions. Looking back is part of the process: What held up, what was wrong and what information was missing?
Was the decision sound — or was I lucky?
I am from Bavaria. My career began in mechatronics, followed by a Bachelor Professional qualification and years in hydraulics. That teaches you to think in systems — and ask where their limits lie.
More than a decade in the markets has shown me my own limits too: six-figure gains, painful losses and the experience of what high leverage and too much faith in a story can do.
Vaapad grew out of a desire to do better for myself. I built the terminal myself: my own capital, my decisions, one place where I can explain them. Public documentation also makes me accountable to myself.
My field is gold and silver, rare earths, critical minerals and junior miners. The Field Notes give that research the space a short post rarely can.
I am autistic. Clear rules and systematic work play an important role for me. Vaapad is also an expression of that personal way of working.
“The calls I got wrong belong on the record too. The aim is to publish the same account record with winners and losers, while stating what the data can and cannot prove.”
The principles in practice
The terminal brings together my IBKR-linked portfolio, available account data, recorded trades, published reasoning, research and member discussions. Two categories describe the book’s speculative focus.
Broker data, calculations, external reports and my own statements are different sources. Stored data can be incomplete or outdated. Without clear contract identification and sufficient original evidence, historical returns cannot be reliably reconstructed. The presentation is self-published and not independently audited.
Understand the data & methodologyResearch scenarios rest on assumptions and do not promise outcomes. Vaapad does not manage client money or provide personal investment advice, a signal service or automated trading. You are looking at the decisions of one individual investor.
Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
